Shungite got its name in 1887 after the village of Shunga in Karelia (Russian Federation), located on the shore of Onezhskoe Lake, where the only mineral Zazhoginsky deposit of shungites is locatedon the territory of the Russian Federation.
 
Carbon dating indicates that Shungite is approximately 2 billion years old. On an Earth scale, it’s not that old at all. They suggest that Shungite may have played a role in the formation of cells in that region. Shungite is unlike any mineral on Earth.
